Item AGEOLOGY OF THE AREA AROUND WURO BIRJI, PART OF SHEET 152 SOUTHWEST GOMBE(Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi, 2011-09-01) GRACE CHIDINMA ILOH; GRACE CHIDINMA ILOHIn the Gongola arm of the Upper Benue Trough, the Gombe Sandstone is at the topmost unit of the cretaceous sediment. Gombe sandstone is a sequence made up of clay stone, mudstone, siltstone, ironstone, and sand stone and minor shales. The· application of vertical electrical sounding (YES) has become essential in detennining depth, thickness and resistivities of the subsurface formations to delineate deep zone of weathering and fracture, which are believed to be the likely ground water bearing formation, considering the complex nature of the terrain. A total of 16 VES stations were conducted using Schlumberger configuration with AB/2 varying from 1 to 65 m. The characteristic sedimentary profile of the Upper Bima Sandstone is highly homogeneous, consisting of a succession of oblique planar cross bedded with only scarce trough cross stratification. Earlier studies showed that the Upper Bima Sandstone was deposited within large braided -stream system containing very shallow water sand bars in an environment without mark topographic contrast.
