Item PHOTOCATALYTIC DEGRADATION OF BRILLIANT GREEN DYE BY FENTON AND ZnO PHOTOCATALYSIS(Bayero University Kano, 2017-04-05) Yusuf Ibrahim; Yusuf IbrahimThe degradation of aqueous Brilliant Green (B.G) was investigated using ZnO photocatalyst and photo-Fenton under visible irradiation. In order to determine the optimum condition the operating parameters of the photo-Fenton process such as initial dye concentration, initial pH, ZnO dosage, H2O2 dosage, and Fe2+ dosage have been investigated. The catalyst was characterized by Fourier transformed infrared (FT-IR) Spectroscopy, before and after the application of the catalyst in the solution and there is no significant change in the spectra. The band gap energy (Eg) of ZnO as calculated from the absorbance taken from UV-Vis Spectrophotometer using Kubelka-Monk and Tauc equation the band gap found to be 3.37ev for both process. Total Organic Carbon (TOC) analysis showed nearly complete mineralization of the dye molecules with slightly higher efficiency for the photo-Fenton process (96%) than the ZnO assisted process (93%).The kinetics of the ZnO photocatalysis followed pseudo first order kinetics while that of the photo-Fenton process followed pseudo second order kinetics with rate constants of 0.026min-1 and 0.143min-1, respectively. Experimental design based the response surface methodology (RSM) using central composite design (CCD) method was applied to assess the individual and interaction effect of the operating parameters on the degradation efficiency. The ANOVA of the model showed the F-value and P-value are significant and lack of fit is insignificant which is good for the model
